2011 Winner: Water Sensitive Urban Design Award
South Bank Corporation
With the vision to become a national leader in water conservation and environmental sustainability, South Bank Corporation, in conjunction with consultants Bligh Tanner, has developed Rain Bank – a Stormwater Harvesting and Reuse Project to improve water efficiency and reduce water consumption across the South Bank Parklands. It is the first large scale stormwater harvesting project to be retrofitted in a fully developed, mixed-use catchment.
Rain Bank will divert stormwater runoff from a 30 hectare catchment across West End to a large underground storage tank, where an estimated 77 megalitres of stormwater will be harvested, stored, treated and reused each year. Once up and running, the project will supply up to 85 per cent of the Parklands’ irrigation demand, as well as progressively supplement water features and toilet flushing when surplus is available.
