Road and rail waterway crossings

Definition

Roads and railways that cross waterways are highly vulnerable to transporting and delivering sediment directly into streams. Stormwater flows fast off roads, as they are often straight and impervious, generating strong erosive power and channelling water and sediment directly to the stream.

Actions

An approach for managing vulnerable areas is:

  • Erosion and sedimentation controls to manage sediment runoff (e.g. cover bare earth, diversion drainage, vegetated swales or sediment basins). Find out more.

Focus areas

A series of maps have been developed identifying the focus for action to help reduce sediment pollution. For access to this information, please contact us.
